Buy the Correct Pair of Chappals First

First things first: if you buy a pair of bad quality chappals, they aren’t going to last long. They also won’t last if you wear them as a daily wear chappal. You need to buy yourself daily wear chappals online that are of premium quality – there’s no point otherwise! They’ll either be misshapen in no time or fall apart really easily. With a little rigorous use, they can be in tatters all over, and that’s not something you want. What you want is a pair of excellent quality chappals that you can wear and wear and wear to your heart’s (and feet’s) content! However durable they are, your regular use chappal pair needs to be cleaned monthly for them to stay as great-looking as they did when you first bought them.

Why Your Daily Wear Chappals Should be Cleaned Once a Month

We shouldn’t leave our chappals dirty because this is unhygienic for many reasons. Be it bacteria and other infectious microbes that can come into our homes on our chappals if we’ve worn them outside, for reasons that are plain and simple: smelly feet mean smelly chappals! Odourful chappals aren’t something we like going out to meet other people in. Sometimes smelly feet can be because of fungus related issues – another reason to keep your regular use chappals clean and smelling fresh. Fungal infections can develop in the humid, muggy months of the month if chappals aren’t kept completely clean as well – a vicious cycle that can easily be avoided.

Easiest Method: Use the Washing Machine

It seems like an unlikely way to clean your chappals, but this is one of the most useful methods. It does however take up a lot of water, and that’s avoidable if we’re trying to be as eco-friendly and environmentally conscious as we can, but it’s very easy to do when you’re a naturally busy person. Just fling them (gently) into the machine, use a cold water cycle as hot water will make the chappals all wonky in shape, and use mild detergent. Let them air dry and you’re all set to wear your daily wear chappal again.

Slightly More Work: Hand-Wash

This is slightly more work but can be easily done as well. In a sink or a tub, add some soap, this should be gentle as well. Add your chappals in and let them soak for a while, scrub them with a toothbrush if they’re particularly dirty. These have to air dry as well, don’t squeeze them, you’ll ruin the shape of your chappals!

You can also add a pinch of baking powder to the water and mix it well, or add a little onto the bristles of the toothbrush and scrub the stubborn bits of dirt that aren’t coming out with just soap and water.

More Work: Baking Soda/White Vinegar without Water

If your chappals are made of materials other than rubber and foam/plastic/EVA, and are made of leather or suede, you should try using this method because they don’t do well if you wash them with water. It’s simple enough, but you will need to be patient. Some of us like being in the kitchen, or have to be, and we’ve definitely had instances where something oily or greasy has fallen onto our nice chappals. There’s an easy fix! More stuff from a kitchen that comes in handy. Use half a teaspoon of this and dab it onto the stains on your chappals, and the footbeds as well for an overall clean, and let it be for about a day. You can then remove the leftover powder with a cloth or a brush and voila! Clean chappals. If some stains persist, you can try this again.
